Exploring Oman
Muttrah Souq

Souq is the Arabic word for a market or a place where all kinds of goods are bought, sold or exchanged. Friendly haggling is part of the experience, and is almost expected by the tradespeople.

One of the most fascinating souqs in the Gulf, the Muttrah Souq in the heart of Muscat is still the source of many Omani families' daily household needs. The main entrance is on Muttrah Corniche, but there are many small streets in the village behind the Corniche that lead into the souq.

The main thoroughfare of the souq carries mainly household goods, shoes, and ready-made garments. Further inside, you can enjoy the mixed smells of frankincense, perfume oils, fresh jasmine and spices.

The real excitement of visiting Muttrah Souk is in exploring the side streets. Wander down any of the small side alleys, and discover a selection of tiny shops full of Omani silver, stalls of gleaming white dishdashas and embroided kumahs, brightly colored cloth and multicoloured head scarves. You also find Omani pots, paintings, hookah pipes, framed khanjars, leatherwork and incense.
