Asia Pacific's leading luxury hotel group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, announced today at a ground-breaking ceremony that it will open a luxury hotel in Wenzhou of Zhejiang province, China in 2008.

Designed by Tokyo-based K.K.S. International, the 409-room Shangri-La Hotel, Wenzhou will be located in the city's new development area Zhongxin District, overlooking the well-known Oujiang river. The hotel will be adjacent to the Wenzhou Convention and Exhibition Centre. Following Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou which opened in 1984, and the recently announced Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo which will open early 2007, this will be the group's third property in Zhejiang province in east China.

Contemporary styled and featuring spectacular river views, the hotel's guestrooms will measure a minimum 43 square metres, and will provide guests with the full array of Shangri-La services and facilities, including 24-hour room service, same day laundry and valet service, satellite TV, data ports, broadband and wireless internet access. The five floors of Horizon Club accommodations, Shangri-La's exclusive retreat for discerning travellers, will offer a host of special amenities and privileges, including Horizon Club lounge for daily breakfast and cocktails, meeting rooms, express check-in and check-out services.

Dining and entertainment options will include an all day dining outlet, Chinese restaurant, speciality restaurant, lobby lounge and entertainment centre. Meeting and banqueting facilities will feature a 2,000 square-metre grand ballroom, complemented by a 280 square-metre auditorium, and other 10 function rooms with a total space of 1,340 square metres. The hotel's other major facilities will include a business centre, spa and health club with an indoor swimming pool.

"This hotel demonstrates Shangri-La's continuing commitment in mainland China which is the key focus of the group's expansion plan in Asia Pacific. Currently we are the largest luxury hotel company in mainland China, operating 20 hotels and having more than 15 projects under development," commented Giovanni Angelini, chief executive officer and managing director of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.

Located on the east coast of China, Wenzhou is a deep-sea port on the Oujiang river leading to the East China Sea, and a major trade centre in the region for tea, cotton and fruits. It has a variety of light manufacturing and maintains a large export trade, benefiting from its close trade relations with Shanghai. Founded over 17 centuries ago, the city still retains many ancient architectural elements today.

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently manages 49 hotels under Shangri-La and Traders brands with a rooms inventory of over 23,000. Shangri-La hotels are five-star deluxe properties featuring extensive luxury facilities and services. Shangri-La hotels are located in Australia, mainland China, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sultanate of Oman, Thailand, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.
